In Italia il comunismo è sempre stato presente ancora prima della rivoluzione bolscevica. A quel tempo si chiamavano socialisti ma il comportamento era in perfetta sintonia con il comunismo di Lenin e Stalin. Infatti dopo la fine della 1a guerra mondiale, negli anni 1916-1921 si scatenarono cercando con tutti i mezzi di avere il potere, approfittando dei governi deboli di quel tempo. Numerose erano le prepotenze verso quanti non erano social-comunisti, e molti italiani dovettero subire violenze contro le proprietà e fisiche, nonostante che da sempre la maggioranza degli italiani è anti-comunista.

Il 21 Gennaio 1921 nasce a Livorno, in Toscana, il P.C.I. Partito Comunista d'Italia, sezione italiana della III internazionale. Il Partito Comunista d'Italia si poneva come obbiettivo l'abbattere lo Stato borghese, abolire il capitalismo e realizzare il comunismo tramite la Rivoluzione e la dittatura del proletariato, seguendo così l'esempio dei comunisti russi di Lenin.
